The Former Official And Makeshift Camp In Samos Island

Fence, barbed wire, camera surveillance as seen at the camp. The former official refugee - migrant camp surrounded by barbed wire fence at Vathy of Samos Island and the neighboring makeshift camp with handmade tents and some from UNHCR that is located just next to the houses of Vathi town, as seen deserted. The camp has been emptied and people relocated or moved with the police escort to the new camp and some very few houses. Once this facility hosted at its peak 7500 asylum seekers at the official facilities but also the makeshift camp in the forest that was nicknamed The Jungle. The camp residents moved to the new Closed Controlled facility funded by European Union, as Europe spends 276 million euros of EU money for new camps on the islands of Samos, Lesbos, Chios, Kos and Leros. Refugees and migrants arrived from Turkey on rubber dinghy boat risking their lives. Samos Island, Greece on September 23, 2021 (Photo by Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto)
