Syrian refugees in Bulgaria demand documents allowing entry in EU countries

Syrian refugees in Bulgaria demand documents allowing entry in EU countries. The protest was held on 08.04.2014 in front of the European Commission Representation in Sofia. Although many Syrians accommodated at refugee centers have been granted refugee status, the Bulgarian international travel documents do not allow them to reach EU countries. Meanwhile, Amnesty International called on EU countries to refrain from transferring asylum seekers to Bulgaria until the country improved the poor living conditions at refugee centers and reviewed its slow asylum procedure. Under EU regulation, asylum seekers can be returned to Bulgaria if it is the first country through which they have entered the EU. (Photo by Hristo Vladev/NurPhoto)
