Cherry blossoms reach peak bloom in Washington, DC

A puddle reflects cherry trees and visitors at the tidal basin in Washington, DC. The puddle was left by flooding at high tide, a result of climate change. The trees are threatened by higher tides that wash the roots of some trees in brackish water. The cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912, and their blossoms mark the beginning of spring in the DC area. (Photo by Allison Bailey/NurPhoto)
