Church Of The First Peoples In Edmonton Get Ready For The Pope's Visit
View of a wooden plaque on the facade of Sacred Heart Church in downtown Edmonton. The historic building on Church Street was built and opened in 1913 and then suffered a devastating fire in 1966. Originally built to serve English Catholics, Sacred Heart hausted Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Croatian, and Aboriginal Catholic communities. Throughout its history, the Church has been known as a destination for immigrants and transients, and describes itself as living a tradition of welcoming the stranger'.
