Pope Francis celebrates 'Via Crucis' procession at Colosseum in Rome

Rome, Italy – April 18, 2014: Pope Francis leads the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) torchlight procession celebrated in front of the Colosseum on Good Friday in Rome, Friday, April 18, 2014. The 'Via Crucis' (Way of the Cross or Stations of the Cross) is part of the Easter tradition in Catholic countries. It takes place on Good Friday and commemorates the passion and death of Jesus Christ through the reading of prayers along a path of 14 stations. The stations all refer to different stages of Jesus’ last journey to the Golgotha. In Rome, the traditional Via Crucis takes place at the ancient Colosseum amphitheater.(Photo by Giuseppe Ciccia/NurPhoto)
