Indonesian Farmers

A farmer, Ibu Gonyah (52), repels a Sparrows attack by pulling a plastic rope connected to a biscuit tin, which is tied to a pole, causing a loud noise that can scare the birds away from her rice field in Bekasi, West Java province, on August 25, 2022. Although there are many more modern ways to get rid of bird pests, such as ultrasonic devices, snare nets, and so on, most farmers in Indonesia still choose to use traditional methods that have been used from generation to generation, such as pulling cans to produce noise known as, Komprangan, or putting clothes on wood to resemble humans, calls, Orang-orangan Sawah, to repel Sparrows, which are considered more friendly and do not harm the birds. This is done with the reason to maintain harmony between humans and nature. (Photo by Aditya Irawan/NurPhoto)
