L-R Mr William Pate (Chairman Ram Sales Committee), Mr Dan Withall, (Border Union, Executive Director), Mr Peter Douglas (Ram Sales Committee) Dan Withall, ring the sale bell, that traditionally marks the start of selling, this year, the bell tolled twice ahead of 2 minutes silence in respect of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. Kelso Ram Sales,Internationally recognised as the largest sale of Rams in the world, Kelso Ram Sales under the auspices of The Border Union Agricultural Society, began in 1838 when 120 Rams were offered for sale by auction, fetching an average price of three to six pounds. The annual sale on the second Friday of September has grown and flourished since these early days, and now frequently offers well over 5,000 rams for auction in 15 rings from over 15 breeds with a top selling price of 65,000 in 2021.
