Abrasion And Rising Sea Level Threatening The North Coast Of West Java

Villagers try to build wave-retaining sheet piles from bamboo as an effort to slow down the rate of abrasion in Cemarajaya village, Karawang regency, West Java province, on December 6, 2022. According to villagers, the rate of abrasion due to waves and sea level rise in Cemarajaya village is fast, with an average of 5 meters of land sinking each year. Since 2000, waves and rising sea levels accompanied by tidal floods have begun to hit the village after the plantation land was converted into a shrimp pond. Now, the village, which was originally about 500 meters from the shoreline, has become the front line that was hit by waves, and is still experiencing abrasion that threatens the village's existence.
