Emergency's Life Support Ship With 142 Migrants On Board Docked In Livorno
Emergency's Life Support ship docked in Livorno, Italy, on 22 December 2022. On board, 142 migrants, were rescued at sea by the NGO and came from ''Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Eritrea, Guinea, Mali, Pakistan, and Somalia. They are divided between 109 men; 26 unaccompanied minors between the ages of 13 and 17; five women including one who is 7 months pregnant and two children under 2 years old with their mothers. Many of the castaways, Emergency says, tell of being arbitrarily detained in Libya where they suffered violence of various kinds. The Life Support ship had departed from Genoa on Dec. 13, bound for Central Mediterranean waters on its first mission. The first rescue, 70 people, took place on the night of Dec. 18, in international waters of the Libyan Sar zone, while the second rescue, of 72 people, took place 24 hours later and at night in international waters of the Maltese Sar zone. The Life Support is the first of two NGO ships expected in the Tuscan port of call. The other is the Sea Eye 4 with 108 migrants on board: it will likely arrive in Livorno on Dec. 23 around 10 a.m. (Photo by Enrico Mattia Del Punta/NurPhoto)
