These fruit are grown for ornamental purposes, in part because of the distal end of the fruit resembles a woman's breast, while the proximal end looks like a cow's udder. It is reputed to have medicinal use in various treatments ranging from athlete's foot to irritability and restlessness, it is imported to Taiwan and Hong Kong from South America as decorative foliage for use in religious ceremonies and festivals and use in floral arrangements.
