The yellow bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis) is a very small heron (30 to 40 cm in length and weighing 80 to 100 grams) of marshy, well-vegetated water bodies. It is of Old World origins, breeding in the northern Indian Subcontinent, east to the Russian Far East, Japan and Indonesia. Adult is pale orangish brown or yellow, depending on the light, with a narrow dark cap. It stays hidden in the paddy, lily-pad, or water hyacinth and quietly hunts frogs, mollusks, prawns, and mudbugs. This bittern is typically quiet but occasionally gives harsh grating calls when flushed.
