Elephants Eating Garbage in Sri Lanka
Elephants coming to garbage pits to eat garbage in Kaduruwela, Sri Lanka, on February 13, 2023. It was possible to see elephants eating garbage in a garbage pit in the Kaduruwela area of Polonnaruwa district, which is 224 kilometers from Colombo city, and the skeletal remains of an elephant that died due to eating polythene at a nearby place. Sri Lanka is also the country where most elephants die in the world. Elephant-human conflict is the main reason for this. Apart from that, many elephants die from eating garbage. In the last year (2022), 433 elephants have died in Sri Lanka. Apart from littering, shootings, traps, and road accidents have also contributed to the increasing number of elephant deaths. Also, 145 people have died in 2022 due to elephant-human conflict. Encroachment on elephant habitats by humans has also resulted in destruction of crops and property, as well as human lives. Not only elephants but also dogs, cows, and birds come to eat in these garbage pits, and these garbage pits affect the lives of elephants as well as their lives.
