Court Rules On Possible Prison Sentence For Abortion Activist In Poland

An abortion rights supporter is seen at the Warsaw-Praga District Court on the day abortion activist Anna Wydrzynska will receive a verdict on 14 March, 2023. Wydrzynska is being accused of aiding an abortion by helping to provide access to pills to a woman seeking to terminate her pregnancy. Wydrzynska faces up to three years in prison if convicted. Poland has some of the world's strictest abortion laws. Abortions are illegal in almost all but the most severe cases such as risk of death to the mother. In practice however the law has resulted in much confusion with doctors refusing to abort even in cases where the mother's life was at stake resulting in multiple cases of death in just the past year.
