The Urgell Canal, an infrastructure in the Lleida area, located in the east of Spain, on april 24, 2023, is preparing to stop supplying water to fruit fields for the first time since its construction in 1862 due to the severe drought affecting Catalonia. This canal supplies water to the fields in an area that was once desertic and produced no food, but now has a strong sweet fruit industry (nectarines, peaches, apples). Due to this cut, the Spanish government is considering declaring the area a disaster zone, as a significant loss of production is expected. (Photo by Eric Renom/NurPhoto)
