Workers covering the structure of Borobudur Tample by terpaulin to prevent demage from volcano ash in Magelang, Central Java, on October 13, 2020. The work was carried out to prevent demage the ninth-century tample Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage, from volcano ash due to the increased activity of mount Merapi.

The mining location is in a disaster-prone area, which endangers safety and damages the environment within the Mount Merapi national park area. This raises concerns about disasters that threaten the villages below if there is a cold lava flow or hot clouds in the event of an eruption because there is no longer any vegetation acting as a natural barrier. However, economic pressures encourage workers to continue these activities.
