Women wearing protective face masks seen during a demonstration organized by We Will Stop Femicide Platform in Istanbul, Turkey on July 19, 2020. They requested the Istanbul Convention (Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence) to come to force in Turkey, since violence against women has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Turkey in November 2011 had become the first signatory state that approved the convention in its parliament, with the support of all four parties represented at the time. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) now demands to withdraw from the convention, and pro-AKP circles launch campaigns against it.
