A houseboat is seen near the dried portion of the river Jhelum as the dry spell continues in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on December 11, 2025. A severe rainfall deficit of nearly 90 percent since November 5 causes major rivers and streams in the region to reach alarmingly low levels, with some springs drying up. Vast stretches of riverbeds are exposed, leaving the landscape dry and barren. Meanwhile, according to data from Air Quality India, several areas in Jammu and Kashmir record an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 288, placing them in the 'Very Poor' category on international air-quality standards. The rising pollution levels spark growing concern about their potential impact on tourism in the region.

Haze from wildfire smoke is seen in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on July 14, 2025. An air quality warning is issued for the city of Toronto as smoke from forest fires over Northern Ontario moves into the area and causes air quality to deteriorate significantly. Toronto's air quality is currently ranked second worst in the world, according to data from Swiss air quality tracker IQAir. The advisory states that during heavy smoke conditions, everyone's health is at risk regardless of their age or health status. People are advised to limit time outdoors and to reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities, and events. Toronto is the second-most polluted major city in the world as of 8 a.m. on Monday. The area burned by wildfires so far this season is the second-largest on record in Canada. Wildfires have consumed 3.7 million hectares this year. Environment Canada warns last year that Canadians should be prepared for more extreme weather events, such as wildfires and hurricanes, triggered by human-caused climate change.
