It was dedicated to Santa María de Tiermes.Santa Cruz came to the X century as a Cluniac Benedictine monastery. Later, in the twelfth century, as happened to the Santa Juliana in Santillana del Mar, he became collegiate by a group of canons of the Order of Saint Augustine. At this time was a realengo whose señorío yielded Alfonso XI, and in the fourteenth century, his son don Tello to pass it by inheritance to the Manrique family.Only the original monastery church was built in the XII century in Romanesque style and whose appearance has been altered by additions and reforms is maintained.And part of the "Romanesque Route" in northern Spain.
