Some slugs are predators and eat other slugs, snails, or earthworms. Slugs' bodies are made up mostly of water and, without a full-sized shell, their soft tissues are prone to desiccation. They must generate protective mucus to survive. Many species are most active just after rain because of the moist ground or during nighttime. A land slug was observed crawling on the floor of a house and shrinking when touched at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on 19/03/2024.

Chinchorro mummy on display in the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino) in Santiago, Chile. Mummy from the Chinchorro culture (approximately 2000 years older than the Egyptian mummification process). The Chinchorro used a complex surgical procedure to replace the body's soft tissues with branches, plants and mud.
