A Kashmiri Shiite Muslim man holds a portrait of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during a protest against the US and Israel in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on January 16, 2026. Protests take place across the Kashmir Valley after Friday congregational prayers in support of Iran and against the US amid rising tensions between the two nations. Meanwhile, Iran's deadly crackdown appears to broadly quell protests for now, according to a rights group and residents, as state media reports more arrests on Friday in the shadow of repeated U.S. threats to intervene if the killing continues. The prospect of a U.S. attack retreats since Wednesday, when President Donald Trump says he has been told killings in Iran are easing, but more U.S. military assets are expected to arrive in the region, showing the continued tensions, Reuters reports.

Cadres of the Nepali Congress attend the opening ceremony of the special convention of the party organized in Kathmandu, Nepal, on January 11, 2026. The two-day event involves active participation from general secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma. The acting party president and other senior party members abstain from the opening ceremony in protest. The second special general convention, called by Thapa and Sharma, takes place against the backdrop of a deepening intra-party dispute. The establishment faction, led by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, opposes the convention, arguing it could split the party, and instead pushes for the regular general convention scheduled for May. Thapa and Sharma assert that the convention is demanded by 2,488 elected representatives, more than 54 percent of the total. Leaders supporting the convention state that over 60 percent of elected delegates participate. The Congress statute includes a provision that mandates the party leadership to call a special general convention if at least 40 percent of the party's elected general convention representatives demand it. A petition signed by 53 percent of the Nepali Congress general convention representatives is submitted at the party headquarters in mid-October, seeking a special general convention and election of new leadership.

Demonstrators raise their fists while chanting anti-Kais Saied slogans during a popular march that brings together thousands of Tunisians, including opposition supporters, human rights activists, civil society members, and families of detained opposition figures in Tunis, Tunisia, on January 10, 2026. According to organizers, the march, taking place under the slogans ''Injustice Heralds Revolution'' and ''Revolutionary Mandate Against Tyranny,'' aims for the restoration of the spirit of the Tunisian Revolution and the defense of freedom and dignity, asserting that the revolution belongs to the people. Participants denounce an escalating crackdown on freedoms and rights, describing it as an injustice under President Kais Saied's rule. The march comes in response to President Kais Saied's claim that a pro-Saied rally on the revolution's 15th anniversary in December 2025 reflects a popular mandate, a claim that critics challenge due to limited and orchestrated turnout.
