The golden jackal (Canis aureus) - the largest of the jackals - is resembling a small wolf, but with a comparatively more slender build, shorter legs, and a shorter tail. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), the golden jackal is thriving in widely diverse habitats across extensive ranges, such as semi-desert, short to medium grasslands and savannas in Africa; and forested, mangrove, agricultural, rural and semi-urban habitats in India and Bangladesh. Its appearance is varying considerably across its range. Currently, the condition of urban jackals is very poor, as they lack food and shelter, and the pressure of urbanization has reduced their habitat, with most of the jackals being diseased. Furthermore, houses are being constructed by filling reservoirs, leading to a shortage of water for them. They are collecting food from plastic waste and sometimes they are even eating the plastic. This photo was taken on World Wildlife Day at Tehatta, West Bengal, India on March 3rd, 2023.
