The santoor is a traditional Kashmiri string instrument, originally known as the Shatatantri Veena, that has deep cultural roots in the region and is played using two small wooden mallets. The Newa: community marks this day as New Year's Day, honoring the indigenous calendar of Nepal. Shankhadhar Sakhwa initiates the Nepal Sambat in 880 AD when he relieves the people from debt during the reign of Lichchhavi King Raghavdev. In recognition of his significant contribution, the government declares Sakhwa a national luminary on November 18, 1999.
