Faithful throw rose petals from the balcony as the statue of the Holy Doctors passes by during the Holy Doctors procession in Bitonto, Italy, on October 19, 2025. The feast dedicated to the Holy Doctors is celebrated in Bitonto every year on the third Sunday of October since 1733. On this occasion, the parish priest Don Gaetano Coviello welcomes the numerous pilgrims and citizens who arrive at the sanctuary to venerate Saints Cosmas and Damian. Many faithful, coming from all over southern Italy, travel to the city to ask the saints for favors or to thank them for graces received, as they are recognized as miracle workers.

A worshipper looks at paintings of miracles performed over the years by Saints Medici Cosmas and Damian at the Basilica of Saints Medici in Bitonto on Oct. 15, 2023. Every year the city of Bitonto celebrates Sts. Cosmas and Damian twice. The first time coincides with the Latin liturgical solemnity on September 26. Already in the preceding days, the faithful participate in liturgical and Eucharistic celebrations with hymns, songs, prayers, and assiduous participation in the Novena. The second feast, referred to as the 'external' feast, occurs on the third Sunday in October, set on that date by decree of the Episcopal Curia in 1733 to allow the rural population to complete activities related to the wine campaign. The external feast is based on the event of the procession, the traditional 'intorciata,' with its forms of 'direct worship' and the characteristic gait of the faithful, provided with large candles, barefoot
