A child tries to grab the leaves of a ketapang tree that is starting to grow on Dupa Beach, Palu, Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia on July 9, 2021. The community is supported by the local government to plant vegetation along the beach to protect and defend the coastline from the threat of erosion and abrasion. At least 40 percent of the 81,000 kilometers of beaches in Indonesia are damaged by abrasion. In recent years, the coastline in several areas in Indonesia has narrowed which is quite alarming. Abrasion that occurs is capable of submerging land between 2 to 10 meters per year.
