Explosion of the quarantana in front of the Church of St. Dominic in Ruvo di Puglia on April 9, 2023. On Easter Day, the "Quarantane," female-looking puppets symbolizing Lent, exploded in the skies of Ruvo di Puglia. It is a tradition that is renewed in other cities and towns in southern Italy: suspended from balconies or on squares or even, in small sizes, hung on the doors of houses, the Quarantane, in addition to symbolizing the period of penance that will end at Easter, perform, according to tradition, a salvific function because they are capable of driving away evil spirits.

The first crucifer enters the Church, kneeling prays and then scourging himself with the chain in Noicattaro on April 14, 2022. In Noicattaro, on the evening of Holy Thursday, one of the oldest Holy Week rites in Puglia takes place: the procession of the Crociferi. The crucifers are men dressed in black clothes, hoods pulled down on their faces and crown of thorns on their heads who, from the church of the Madonna della Lama, walk barefoot through the streets of the center to visit the altars of the reposition set up in the churches of the city. After the bonfire is lit, the crucifers move in procession followed by torches and tree frogs dragged by the children. These particular tools have the function of remembering the crowd of praetorians who accompanied Jesus on his painful walk towards Pilate.
