Interior of confectionery workshop in Xochimilco, Mexico City, on the eve of Día de Muertos. The papel picado in the offering that is mounted before this celebration represents the air, one of the four elements that must be present in any offering on the Day of the Dead. Each papel picado has different colors, which were adapted to a new rite, at the time of evangelization. The orange represents mourning; purple refers to the Catholic religion; the blue one refers to the deceased who had a death related to water; red is for warriors or women who died during childbirth; green is for young people; white, for children, yellow, for the elderly and black symbolizes the underworld.
