The Asian openbill or Asian openbill stork (Anastomus oscitans) is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. This distinctive stork is found mainly in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is greyish or white with glossy black wings and tail, and the adults have a gap between the arched upper mandible and recurved lower mandible. Young birds are born without this gap, which is thought to be an adaptation that aids in the handling of snails, their main prey. Although they are resident within their range, they make long-distance movements in response to weather and food availability. This photo was taken at a wetland in Kaliganj, West Bengal, India, on 17/02/2024.

Wetlands cover only about 6% of the Earth's land surface, yet 40% of all plant and animal species live or breed in them, highlighting their critical ecological role. Contrary to the perception that wetlands are merely large bodies of water like ponds, rivers, or lakes, they can also be temporary water bodies formed in low-lying cultivated lands due to monsoon rains, attracting many migratory birds. However, the use of land fertilizers and pesticides poses a threat to these species. World Wetlands Day 2024 was celebrated on February 2nd, with the theme "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing." It was observed that in Kaliganj, West Bengal, India, on February 17, 2024, farmland became waterlogged, attracting migratory birds such as the Asian Openbill Stork (Anastomus oscitans) and the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), while people navigated the area in boats.
