In Helmond, Netherlands, on July 1, 2025, a tense protest against the planned arrival of a youth asylum center in the city center leads to the arrest of three people during the rally. The demonstration draws several hundred participants, including far-right political leaders Geert Wilders of the PVV Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid) and Thierry Baudet of the FVD Forum for Democracy (Forum voor Democratie) political party, who deliver speeches condemning the government and its asylum policies. Police detain two individuals for illegal weapon possession and a third for failing to provide identification. Despite the arrests, the protest remains mostly peaceful under heightened security measures, with a lot of riot police and special units and vehicles deployed around, including roadblocks, rooftop police surveillance, and a drone. A smaller group of counter-demonstrators gathers nearby in support of the asylum center, holding signs and chanting pro-refugee slogans with flags of Palestine. The demonstration reflects growing national tensions over migration as the country heads toward early elections following the collapse of the Schoof cabinet.
