The char areas have some of the highest levels of poverty in the country. Red chili is the main source of income in the area and mostly women are engaged in its production and processing along with their regular unpaid care work. Women in this area have limited or no access to markets or finance; they have less bargaining power and limited income.

Maria Cabarias Rag·n 25, a resident of the neighborhood of Villa de Vallecas a mother of two children Ismael aged 7 and Mariam 4 years in charge, the small with respiratory failure requiring her to sleep with oxygen. Its only income RMI with all the related costs were not enough to rent a home. In October last year this neighbor had to leave the room where he lived with her two children because he could not cope with the rent, the caseworker's response when she called to say he was on the street was quote: "Good for when you are on the street and call the Social Samur that will take your kids to the Community of Madrid and with you we'll see what will happen". She replied that if she had a decent social rent would not be in this situation the assistant's response was: "Do not go for those or i'll hang up you" Before being on the street with their children, somebody tell her a building where she was indicated that there was an empty apartment that had been evicted by Bankia over 1 year, the floor was in a sorry state with no doors, no kitchen but with the help of the people occupy that house and now she's living in it. So far the police had not come, but last Friday 28-June-2013 was presented the police, the court and the locksmith with immediate eviction order, but they did not know who they would vacate, because that order had no name. The mother said she could not go because she was with her ??children alone, and one of them Mariam suffers from a chronic lung disease, They said they give her a week and on Friday they'll return, and the best that she can do is to left the keys of the house in court and go outside the house.
