Tamil Hindu devotees perform the Angapradakshinam ritual (as an act of penance) during the Vinayagar Ther Thiruvizha Festival in Ontario, Canada. The Angapradakshinam ritual requires devotees to hold puja coconuts while rolling on the ground behind the large wooden chariot carrying the idol of Lord Vinayagar throughout the entire procession, which often lasts around 6-7 hours. This festival is part of the 15 day long festival that honours Lord Ganesh which culminates with this extravagant chariot procession. During this puja an idol of Lord Ganesh is paraded around the temple as prayers are performed by Hindu priests.

A Tamil Hindu devotee performing the para-kavadi ritual holds a flaming coconut as he sits on large sharp blades and is bounced up and down as an act of penance during the Vinayagar Ther Thiruvizha Festival in Ontario, Canada. Devotees prepare for the celebration by cleansing themselves through prayer, celibacy and fasting for 11 to 25 days before the festival. During this religious festival several devotees show their devotion by making offerings and by piercing their bodies with metal hooks and skewers.
