Detainees' Families Protest Second Hearing In 'Conspiracy Against State Security' Case In Tunis

11 April 2025
Families and relatives of the detained political opposition figures in the so-called 'conspiracy against state security' case hold up photos of the detainees as a police car drives past them during a demonstration in front of the court in Tunis, Tunisia, on April 11, 2025. The demonstration supports the detainees during the second remote hearing of the court. The demonstrators demand a public trial and reject the remote trial previously decided by the court. They protest against what they consider an unfair and invalid trial, call for the release of the detainees, and accuse the Tunisian president, Kais Saied, of using the judiciary to persecute those who reject his policies. In this context, professor and political opposition figure Jawhar Ben Mbarek, one of the most prominent detainees, is on hunger strike since March 30 in protest at his continued arbitrary detention. Since February, Tunisia sees a wave of arrests of journalists, activists, judges, businessmen, and politicians, including the leader of the Ennahda party, Rached Ghannouchi, who is detained since April 2023.

Chaima Issa, a political opponent, holds a placard that reads ACAB (all cops are bastards) as she shouts slogans against Tunisian President Kais Saied during a protest in Tunis, Tunisia, on January 14, 2025. The protest marks the 14th anniversary of the flight of former Tunisian President and dictator Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, following a call for demonstrations by the Tunisian Network for Rights and Freedoms. The protesters call for the preservation of the gains of the Tunisian Revolution and protest against what they describe as the authoritarian drift of President Kais Saied, as well as the assault on democracy, freedoms, and rights by the authorities. Following a popular uprising in Tunisia between December 2010 and January 2011, which the authorities brutally repressed, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali is forced to flee the country on January 14, 2011. This date becomes the official commemoration of the Tunisian Revolution, called Revolution Day, marking the start of the 'Arab Spring' and leading to major political changes in Tunisia. In 2021, President Kais Saied changes the date for commemorating the Revolution from January 14 to December 17.
