One construction worker is being killed and one construction worker is being critically wounded in a scaffolding incident near the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center Building in Chicago, Illinois, United States, on June 6, 2024. A construction worker is dying after a scaffolding collapse at a Chicago hospital. The incident is occurring on the south side of the Comprehensive Cancer Center building on Maryland Street near 59th Street around 12:00 p.m., Thursday afternoon. Officials are saying two workers are on scaffolding for the elevator shaft construction when they believe high winds are causing the scaffolding to collapse. The workers are falling eight stories, through a ground-level pit. One construction worker is being pronounced dead at the scene. Another worker is being sent to the hospital in critical condition. Firefighters are saying they see the scaffold swaying when they arrive. It is being secured to the building after the incident. Both workers are being employed by Turner Construction.
