The world aviation passenger traffic numbers declined due to the travel restrictions, safety measures such as lockdowns, quarantine, etc during the era of the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic that hit hard the aviation and travel industry. Greece spotted the Delta mutation in June and nowadays this Covid variant is the majority in the cases, the country imposed new measures and local lockdowns. The airport is owned by the Greek Government but is operated with long term lease by Fraport Greece, subsidiary of Fraport Aktiengesellschaft AG.
