18 January 2024

Supporters of the 'squirrels,' a group of arborist-climbers, are constructing a symbolic concrete wall near the Courthouse of Toulouse, France, on January 17, 2024, as a protest against the ongoing construction of the A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. The 'squirrels' are currently on trial at the courthouse for obstructing the felling of trees near Verfeuil by occupying them. Sympathizers have gathered to show their support, creating a mock concrete wall where they are painting the message 'A69 won't be built' and burning a representation of the Earth. They aim to protect the remaining trees that the public works group NGE/Atosca has not yet destroyed. Despite ongoing legal proceedings, NGE/Atosca continues to cut down trees. The opposition group 'La Voie est Libre,' along with Thomas Brail, is calling for the construction of the highway to be halted until all judicial decisions are finalized, noting that not all expropriations for farmers have been resolved. Opponents argue that upgrading the N126 would be sufficient for the anticipated 6,000 vehicles per day and would be much less costly. The A69 highway project, estimated at EUR512 million in 2018 euros excluding inflation for 54 kilometers, threatens to destroy over 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land.

13 May 2020

Crematorium workers watch as funeral workers carry a body towards the crematory chamber in Pasay City, Philippines on May 12, 2020. Crematorium workers, with the daily shift from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., often extend beyond working hours as the demand for cremation services rises. An average of eight bodies, suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases included, are brought to the facility every day. Fearing that they might infect their families, workers take extra precautions and choose to temporarily stay at the crematorium instead of going home. As Metro Manila and some parts of the Philippines remain on enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), traditional funeral rites are denied for deaths linked to coronavirus while wakes and burials limited to immediate family members are permitted for deaths not related to coronavirus.

Bangladesh became the first country to regulate disposable bag use when the government banned single-use plastic bags in 2002. At that time environmental groups estimated that about 9.3 million plastic bags were dumped in the Dhaka city alone every day, with only 10-15% being put in dustbins. Despite an awareness program warning of a steep fine and six months of imprisonment, after about a year the plastic bags began to excess the market again due to a lack of enforcement. One of the major impacts of plastic bags in Bangladesh is their impact on the storm water drainage system. Plastic bags block drains and waterways, threatening urban environments and creating severe safety hazards. This accumulation of plastic bags on the environment cause deterioration of the landscapes, agriculture soils and it is associated to the death of domestic and wild animals. Landfills or burned each solution is very harmful for the environment. Burning plastic bags emit toxic gases that harm the atmosphere and increase the level of VOCs in the air while landfills hold them indefinitely as part of the plastic waste problem throughout the globe.***FILE PHOTO****
