A pitaya or pitahaya known as ''dragon fruit'' and ''strawberry pear'' is a fruit with leather-like skin and scaly spikes on the fruit exterior of several different cactus species indigenous of the genus Selenicereus (formerly Hylocereus). Plants can begin flowering in as little as six to eight months, although container-grown plants may take up to two years to bear fruit. It is very profitable for farming, once the plant is mature, could see four to six fruiting cycles a year from a plant that is capable of bearing fruit for 20 to 30 years. The biggest enemy of this plant is Fungus (Colletotrichum) and Bacteria (Xanthomonas and Erwinia) attack. Moreover, farmers are advised to prune and destroy the infected plant parts. This dragon fruit cultivation photo was taken at Nabin Nagar, West Bengal, India on 15/09/2023.
