4th Day Of Attempt Of The Cnamo, Police Special Unit, To Dislodge 'ecureuils' Who Live In Tree On The Planned A69 Highway

20 September 2024
Gendarmes stand guard as members of the CNAMO unit try to convince 'Ecureuil' to stop their occupation of Zineb, an old walnut tree, while an excavator works at the base of the walnut tree. For the fourth day, Gendarmerie and CNAMO try to dislodge 'Ecureuils' (i.e., 'Squirrels') from the trees they occupy at the 'Verger' ZAD (Zone to Defend). The 'Verger' ZAD is situated on the planned and disputed A69 highway project. As Gendarmerie and CNAMO intervene, NGE/Atosca begins the destruction of the house and the cutting of all the trees. The CNAMO is a specialized unit of Gendarmes to unlock protesters. 'Ecureuils' (i.e., 'squirrels') live in the trees of the 'Verger' ZAD. This day, Gendarmes of the CNAMO catch only one squirrel. Atosca cuts the tree immediately. They try without success to catch the other 'Ecureuils' and mutilate Zineb, an old walnut tree, to catch two 'Ecureuils'. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' (i.e., 'The Way is Free') wants the highway to be stopped until all the justice decisions on the content are given. All expropriations for farmers are not cleared. Opponents of this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway will cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without inflation) for 53 kilometers. More than 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural fields will be destroyed. Remains of images of Barcelona local residents are seen hanging next to the historic city wall in the Gothic Quarter on 24 March, 2017. Two years ago families of the neighborhood public school (Escola Angel Baixeras-Ciutat Vella) had made a giant mural with pictures of local people, based on the Inside Out project, demanding a playground for children next to the school building. Tourism pressure and the recent bubble in the rental market has led to a gradual expulsion of neighbors. In some areas of districts like the Dreta Eixample, the number of tourist accommodation places is three times the resident population and areas such as Gothic Quarter have lost nearly half of the population in the last decade, from 27,470 to 15,484 residents.

TEHRAN, IRAN - AUGUST 07: Dejan Kaludjerović’s first solo exhibition in Iran “Conversations – Iran” at the Sazmanab presents Six channel sound / site specific installation Sand Box from the series: Conversations: Hula-hoops, Elastics, Marbles and Sand. The “Conversations” series of site-specific installations is based on research and interviews with children in different countries (from 2013-present: Russia, Serbia, Azerbaijan; planned productions include: Iran, Austria, Italy, Romania, etc). The children, locals from each location, range from 7-10 years old and come from different ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds. Each installation is made in relation to the local site and based on specific and often universal children’s games which are accompanied by a sound piece emitted from 6–7 speakers (each speaker for the voice of one child). The children, interviewed individually, are then put into conversation with one another through the editing process, reacting within the installation to one another’s stances on political issues such as social exclusion and inclusion, foreigners, language, colonization, war, money, poverty, etc.
