A milkfish vendor and buyer are engaging in a transaction in Rawa Belong, Jakarta, Indonesia, on February 8, 2024. As the Chinese New Year, also known as Imlek, approaches, numerous milkfish vendors are setting up temporary stalls along the roadside in Rawa Belong. Both the Betawi and Chinese communities are purchasing milkfish to observe the 'Nganter Bandeng' tradition in preparation for the Chinese New Year, which is a significant celebration in Jakarta. The tradition of having processed milkfish on the table is an enduring practice for the Betawi community of Rawa Belong and the Chinese community, thanks to the long-standing 'Nganter Bandeng' tradition of the Betawi people. For the ethnic Chinese, milkfish, which is known for its many bones, is a common food ingredient during the New Year festivities and is believed to symbolize abundant fortune and prosperity. The milkfish brought to the market are fresh, raw, and whole. The tradition has evolved with cultural intermarriage, leading the Chinese population in Jakarta to also embrace the 'nganter' tradition as an expression of gratitude and a spirit of sharing. This milkfish market has become a symbol of cultural harmony between the Betawi community and the ethnic Chinese.
