Greece is reinforcing the Greek Turkish borders with personnel, cameras, drones, heavy vehicles, FRONTEX officers but also with a 5 meter tall fence. The fence is actually a concrete filled, a construction for at least 40KM, a long coverage in the wetlands of Evros river (Meric in Turkish), Greece's river border with Turkey. EU is supporting the border fortification financially. Asylum seekers, migrants and refugees used Evros as an entrance point to Europe, while in March 2020 a huge wave of thousands of people tried to cross the borders. A man sleeps on a bench inside the passenger terminal after his arrival at Piraeus port. 2050 Refugees and migrants from Syria and Afghanistan disembarked from 2 passenger ships at the port of Piraeus, near Athens, on the morning of Thursday February 25, 2016 coming from the Aegean islands. All intend to travel to the northern border of the country where about 3000 migrants and refugees already have stranded because of border controls by other Balkan countries.

A child sleeps in Leros Refugee Camp, Greece, on October 30, 2015. Refugee camp Leros, located on the Greek Island of Leros is a transit camp for refugees who have been picked up by the Greek military at the military base in Farmakonisi after leaving Turkey and becoming lost in the Aegean. The refugees who are transported from Farmakonisi spend one night on the military base and are transferred by boat to Leros Camp. In Leros they are processed within two working days with documents to go Athens. The refugees live in an abandoned building and outside of the building premises while waiting. The conditions are challenging in this very old abandoned building with broken windows, a leaky roof and no sanitation facilities indoors. Most of those being processed at the refugee camp are from Syria and Iraq.
