Full Sturgeon Supermoon setting behind Santa Maria della Pieta Church is seen in Rocca Calascio, Italy, on August 21st, 2024. The Full Sturgeon Moon is a traditional name given to the full moon in August by Native American tribes. It was named after the sturgeon fish, which were most readily caught during this month in the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, called perigee. On August 19th and 20th, 2024, the full moon was at a distance that qualifies it as a supermoon, making it a particularly impressive sight. This full moon was also a ''Blue Moon'': a seasonal Blue Moon is the traditional definition of a Blue Moon and refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons according to NASA.
