Starlings near the sea in Polignano a Mare are invading the Apulian countryside on November 8, 2022. Thousands of starlings attack the countryside of the province of Bari every day, each of these birds eats up to 20 grams of olives per day. The complaint comes from Coldiretti Puglia which signals the worsening of the phenomenon linked to the voracity of these small birds that also act in the Brindisi and Foggia areas. Due to climate change, their presence in the region has become increasingly massive: the high temperatures allow birds to rampage in the fields, devour olives and destroy crops. In the Bari area, the olive-growing area between Polignano a Mare, Castellana Grotte, Monopoli, Alberobello and Locorotondo is particularly affected. "The damage is between 30% and over 60% - explains Coldiretti Puglia in a note - to the olive trees. Starlings destroy the plots used for the olive harvest and olive growers are forced to fight a disaster without having the tools , almost condemned to reschedule their agricultural activities to avoid the destruction of production. Among other things, it is not only olive growing that is affected, given that the passage of flocks of birds leaves such quantities of excrement on the vegetables as to make the product is unpresentable on the market. Starlings find nighttime refreshments in protected areas, to resume daytime food raids for months now, given that the anomalous heat of recent years has made the protected species convert from migratory to sedentary ".
