A man wearing a face mask walks across Oxford Street in London, England, on November 6, 2020. England yesterday began its second national coronavirus lockdown, announced by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson last Saturday, citing fears that covid-19 again threatened to overwhelm the National Health Service (NHS). Pubs, bars, restaurants and non-essential shops are all required to be closed until the currently scheduled end date of December 2. People have meanwhile been asked to stay home as much as possible, although schools and other educational institutions are this time being being kept open and the streets of central London today were markedly busier than the early days of the first lockdown in the spring.

A man wearing a face mask and woman in a face shield walk past the temporarily closed Garrick Theatre on Charing Cross Road in London, England, on October 15, 2020. London is to be placed under "Tier 2" coronavirus lockdown measures from this weekend, which will introduce a ban on people from different households from mixing anywhere indoors, spelling particular concern for the already badly-affected hospitality industry. Several other parts of the country are also to see their covid-19 restrictions similarly stepped-up. The three-tier system for England came into effect this week, with each area of the country classed as being on a medium, high or very high alert (otherwise known as Tiers 1 to 3).

A man wearing a face mask walks past a vacant retail unit, formerly a branch of clothing retailer J.Crew, on Regent Street in London, England, on September 22, 2020. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson this afternoon announced a raft of new coronavirus restrictions to apply across England, possibly to last the next six months, including requiring pubs and restaurants to close at 10pm and for retail staff to all wear face masks. A return to home working where possible is also being encouraged. A man wearing a face mask walks past tape bearing the message 'Live Theatre Missing' stretched across the entrance to the closed Apollo Theatre, home to musical 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie', on Shaftesbury Avenue in London, England, on July 6, 2020. The British government last night unveiled a 1.57 billion GBP 'rescue package' for the arts sector, designed to help museums, galleries, theatres, independent cinemas, heritage sites and music venues through the coronavirus pandemic. It follows weeks of lobbying from industry leaders, who have been warning that many venues were on the brink of collapse, with some theatres around the country having already announced they will be closing down. Performing arts venues have yet to hear when they will be allowed to reopen, and under what kind of conditions, although guidance is expected to be published by the government soon. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden indicated today that outdoor performances would be first to be allowed.
