Woman wearing a face mask while shopping at a grocery store during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 01, 2022. Ontario health officials are reporting another record-breaking number of new COVID-19 cases 18,445 new COVID-19 cases and 12 more deaths were reported today. This comes at the Province of Ontario announced it will no longer be tracking new COVID-19 infections or offering PCR testing to the general public as of next week. The province noted that due to changes in availability of testing, the case counts being reported are an underestimate of the true number of infections in Ontario. Officials warned the data should be 'interpreted with caution.' As of net week the province said that members of the general public with mild symptoms are being asked not to seek testing. The Ontario government announced on Friday that it will no longer collect COVID-19 numbers from school boards and will no longer report the number of COVID-19 infections among students and staff starting next week. Going forward Ontarians will be in the dark in terms of knowing what the true burden of infection is in the community. Large parts of Canada are implementing restrictions as the fifth wave of COVID-19 fuelled by the Omicron variant rapidly spreads across the country.

Cashier at a Walmart store wearing a face mask during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Markham, Ontario, Canada on December 24, 2021. Ontario reported 9,571 new COVID-19 cases and 6 new deaths on Friday, shattering all previous records for infection for the entire length of the pandemic while multiple officials conceded the province's testing system can no longer keep up with and track the spread of infection. Across Ontario, public health units including those in Ottawa and London have issued warnings that timely access to PCR testing is no longer available. The Ministry of Health said that 1,536 of Friday's cases involved unvaccinated people, 356 involved partially vaccinated people, 7,425 involved fully vaccinated people and 254 involved people with unknown vaccination status. An estimated 90 per cent of all new infections are suspected to be caused by the Omicron variant. Large parts of Canada are starting to implement new restrictions as a fifth wave of COVID-19 fuelled by the Omicron variant saw thousands of new cases across the country over the past few days.
