Ituren is a small town of just over 500 inhabitants, is located in the Alto Bidasoa region or in Navarra. The origin of this celebration is uncertain, but it has many similarities to other celebrations where masks and cowbells are the main elements. It is believed that its origin can be linked to celebrations or ancestral rites of change of seasonal cycle, of celebration of the winter solstice. It is one of the most striking masques in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. The "Joaldunak" (its translation is: "those who carry cowbells") are the main characters of the celebration.
