Shoppers with bags from fast fashion retailer Primark and clothing chain TK Maxx wait on Oxford Street in London, England, on December 4, 2020. London has returned to so-called Tier 2 or 'high alert' coronavirus restrictions since the end of the four-week, England-wide lockdown on Wednesday, meaning a reopening of non-essential shops and hospitality businesses as the festive season gets underway. Rules under all three of England's tiers have been strengthened from before the November lockdown, however, with pubs and restaurants most severely impacted. In London's West End, Oxford Street and Regent Street were both busy with Christmas shoppers this afternoon, meanwhile, with the retail sector hoping for a strong end to one of its most difficult years.

Women carrying bags from fast-fashion retailer Primark walk past a clothes store on Oxford Street in London, England, on October 22, 2020. Retail sales figures from the UK Office for National Statistics for the month of September are set to be released tomorrow. Most recently, August figures revealed a fourth straight month of retail growth, though the sector remains in difficult waters as the coronavirus crisis continues to reduce footfall in town centres and undermine consumer confidence.

21 June 2020
Two women wearing face masks carry bags from fast fashion retailer Primark along Oxford Street in London, England, on June 20, 2020. Today has been the first Saturday of high street shopping since non-essential retail stores across England were allowed to reopen last week, having been closed under the coronavirus lockdown for nearly three months. Yesterday, monthly retail sales data from the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed the beginnings of a rebound during May, with a 12 percent recovery from record falls in April, but sales nonetheless remained 13 percent below February's pre-pandemic total. Retail sales figures for June, taking into account this month's reopening of the sector, will be published by the ONS on July 24.
