25 July 2024

Signs are remaining outside the Kerala Secretariat building following the 782-day-long protest for Justice for Sreejith in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala, India, on April 10, 2024. A man from the south Indian state of Kerala is ending a 782-day protest after a federal agency begins investigating his brother's death. SR Sreejith is alleging his brother is murdered by police who arrested him on the charge of stealing a mobile phone. His demand for an independent inquiry into his brother's death is picking up in recent months through the social media movement #JusticeforSreejith. He is ending the protest after federal investigators record his statement. In the face of mounting public pressure, state lawmakers are ordering an internal police investigation into his brother's death. But Mr. Sreejith is refusing, insisting that the case be transferred to India's federal investigation agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Police are saying Sreejeev, 26, committed suicide in custody after he was arrested, but his family is saying he is killed because he is in love with a woman who happens to be related to one of the police officers.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that is occurring in East Orange, New Jersey, United States, on July 23, 2024. The multi-vehicle crash is happening following a police pursuit that is beginning in Newark and ending in East Orange. The driver of one of the vehicles is sustaining fatal injuries. Two drivers from other civilian vehicles are sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. The identities of those involved are not being released at this time. According to the preliminary investigation, detectives from the Bloomfield Police Department (BPD) are receiving an Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) notification alerting them to the presence of a vehicle of interest in a pending robbery investigation. There, the pursued vehicle is crashing into a civilian vehicle and then careening into two other vehicles, including a parked ambulance. The driver of the pursued vehicle is dying from injuries sustained in the crash. All other involved civilians are suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Nexstar Media Inc. is suing the Village of Dolton, Illinois, for refusing to release spending records and documents related to the embattled Mayor of Dolton, Tiffany Henyard, in Dolton, Illinois, United States, on June 2, 2024. Last November, WGN Investigates sent Dolton a public records request, seeking copies of the agency's credit card statements, as well as records relating to Henyard's compensation and the cost of her taxpayer-funded vehicle. The Village of Dolton is declining to release the records, in violation of state law. WGN is filing an appeal with Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul's office, and in a rare binding opinion dated Feb. 9, the attorney general is ordering Dolton to release the credit card statements, along with other requested documents. The Village of Dolton is not complying and releasing the records.
