8 June 2015
17 years old Wasim checking the chains after the cutting process is done in a Gold Jewellery Factory on June 8, 2015 in Kolkata, India. The largest consumer of gold, India is deemed to be the hub of the global jewellery market because of its low costs and availability of high-skilled labour. The Gems and jewelry sector in India plays a significant role in the Indian economy, contributing around 6-7 per cent of the country’s GDP. One of the fastest growing sectors in India, the domestic gems and jewellery industry had a market size of US$ 40.45 billion in 2013, and has the potential to grow double in the next five years. Small scale gold jewellery manufacturing industries in India still work in an unorganized yet efficient way. The technology used to manufacture gold jewellery is still old school and human labour oriented. In most of the small manufacturing shops the workers work for day in and out . Most of the time they stay inside the factory and work and just get a day off to meet their families who are often far off from their workplace. The owners provide them with food and shelter most of the time for free. The workers are often stuffed into a single room or two at the most. They don't work in definite schedule or shift rather they work on consignments and orders. The safety ,health and hygiene is often ignored but owing to the talented and hardworking craftsmen the production is always able to keep up to the market demands in Kolkata, India.
