Workers use an axe along with a chisel, a wedge, and a wooden mallet to split the trunks of coconut palm trees during re-construction of the Raja Gopuram tower of the Arul Eswari Muthumariamman Hindu temple in Jaffna, Sri Lanka on August 15, 2017. The tower was destroyed by bombing during the 26-year long civil war between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). This is just one of the many reminders of the deep scars left behind by the civil war that killed an estimated 40,000 people.

Ancient trees grow from inside the buildings and exit the roof of the Murikandy Pillayar Hindu temple (Murukandy temple) in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. This famous Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh and is a place that all travelers and those that drive past stop, as it is believed that by breaking a coconut and offering prayers at this temple that God protect them while traveling and provide them with a safe journey. This has been the practice from time immemorial and still followed today by all who travel along the A-9 Road.
