Demonstration in Piazza dell'Esquilino, Rome, Italy, on June 12, 2021, organised by the Italian Forum of Water Movements. Ten years ago a broad and determined coalition sanctioned a historic victory in Italy with 27 million 'Yes' votes in the referendums on water, public services and nuclear power, forcing those who had imposed privatisation for decades to take a step backwards. Ten years later, at the height of the pandemic, that victory, based on the defence of the commons and the affirmation of the rights of all? over the profits of a few, has an even more topical meaning. Since December 2020, water, like any other commodity, has been listed on the stock exchange. This is an epoch-making step that opens the door to speculation by big capital and the marginalisation of territories and populations, and constitutes a serious threat to fundamental human rights.
