Richard Mir, a sub-prefect of Calvados arrives for the funeral of Major Edward Podyma (age 96), the last veteran of the 1st Armoured Division of the Polish Armed Forces in the West, took place in the Church Notre-Dame de Guibray, in Falaise. Major Podyma spent over 80 years in France, which became his second homeland. He was born in Poland in 1922, and emigrated to France with his family towards the end of the 1930s. In 1940, he was appointed to the Polish army as a volonteer. After the surrender of France in June 1940, he went to the United Kingdom, where in 1942 he joined the 1st Armored Division. In August 1944, he took part in the victorious Battle of Falaise as a tank driver. After the war he returned to Paris then to Potigny, near Falaise, where he worked a miner.
