In this picture dated September 10, 2016, Communist Party of the Philippines secretary-general Wilma Austria-Tiamzon (left) and chairman Benito Tiamzon (center) talk with former political prisoner Renante Gamara (right), during a public forum in Manila, Philippines. The Communist Party of the Philippines, in a statement, ordered all its units to conduct a silent 21-gun salute to honor its Chairman Benito ''Ka Laan'' Tiamzon, and Secretary-General Wilma Austria ''Ka Bagong-tao'' Tiamzon, as they confirm their deaths, which was earlier reported to have been killed by an operation led by the Armed Forces of the Philippines on August 21 2022 in what the AFP claims to be a naval armed encounter, with the communist party refuting the military's statement, claiming that, along with eight other communist rebels, the Tiamzons were captured in the coastal town of Catbalogan before being tortured and killed, and whose bodies were later set off with explosives. The Tiamzons were released in 2016 as a sign of goodwill to facilitate peace negotiations, before being ordered to arrest after the breakdown of peace talks between the government and communist rebels.
